Chapter 5

In this chapter, you will learn how to: • Explain the functions of an operating system • Discuss operating system characteristics • Describe operating system interfaces • Compare operating system features Operating systems enable users of computing devices to interact with those devices in many ways. The various operating systems have features in common and stark differences. This chapter looks at the primary desktop operating systems you’ll run into in the wild. While the CompTIA IT Fundamentals exam focuses a lot on Microsoft Windows, you’ll get questions on three other desktop operating systems: Apple macOS, Linux, and Google Chrome OS. We’ll start with an analysis of functions common to all operating systems and discuss characteristics of operating systems. Next, we’ll survey the interfaces of the four most common desktop operating systems. The chapter finishes with a side-by-side comparison of features.
